Axel Perez

Axel Perez is a champion for education and an advocate for equitable leadership. Raised by Mexican immigrant parents in the vibrant and diverse neighborhoods of South East Los Angeles, he takes immense pride in his roots. Axel is the founder and Executive Director of Simply Wholehearted, a non-profit organization dedicated to developing heart-centered leaders who make a positive impact on their communities and beyond. His contributions have earned him the honor of being recognized as an Orgullo Latino by California Assembly Speaker Emeritus Anthony Rendon (62nd Assembly District). Axel is devoted to giving back and uplifting his community to create a world that knows no borders.

Janiyah Gaston

A senior at Southern Illinois University majoring in Communication Studies with a specialization in Public Relations and a minor in Journalism, Shaniyah serves in several leadership roles on campus. She is the President of the SIUC chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) and Black Women’s Task Force. NABJ creates space for young Black students to explore their interest in journalism on campus, and the Black Women’s Task Force creates a culture of giving back among Black women on campus.

Additionally, she is the Seasonal Public Relations Team Lead for Digital4Good, which allows her to use her experience to make a positive difference in kids’ lives.
